Dashville Skyline Q&A: Swimming Bell

Swimming Bell

Swimming Bell Q&A

Swimming Bell is the musical project of Katie Schottland, a Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter. Swimming Bell are performing at Dashville Skyline on Saturday October 4

How did you all meet and start playing as a group?
I moved to LA in July, 2020 and it took some time (for obvious reasons), to get out and meet people, find a community.  When I first started playing out here in LA, I would play solo and eventually there was a show that I felt it was time to put a band together for.  I put feelers out into the world and was first connected with Alex (bass) and Tyler (pedal steel).  That was probably the end of 2022 or so.  Since then I’ve been lucky to add some wonderful players to the group – Jaycee (vocals), Evan (keys), Chris (drums).

Describe your music.
I always tell people my music is kinda folky/psyche/indie.  I don’t go into making music with any particular genre or sound in mind, it’s just kind of what feels right at the time.  My latest EP is a little shift in my sound and some have even said it veers toward folk pop.

What inspires you to write a song?
I’m inspired by human connection and reflection.  I’m also inspired by the moon.

What has been your favourite moment of your music journey so far?
Hmm.. I feel like there have been a lot, it’s hard to say my favorite.  I will say that the best feeling is playing to a welcoming audience. Maybe the best moment is about to happen in Australia.  I mean, the fact that we are even coming to Australia is already the a top musical moment.  It’s unreal.

What’s your favourite song to play live? Own or cover.
One of my favorite songs to play live recently is “Meet My Shadow”.  I just love the groove and when we lock in on the harmonies.  Another old one that I enjoy is “For Brinsley”.  When the drums and bass kick in, it feels really good.

Who are your most important musical influences?
The Beatles, Jazz, Bossa Nova, my friends.

What are your three favourite albums of all time?

Abbey Road, Tidal, Graceland

This is your first time performing at Dashville Skyline Festival. What are you looking forward to?

I’m excited to just be enveloped in the experience.  I still can’t believe we have the privilege of playing music in Australia.
