From New Music to New Orleans: Brian Wise Prepares for the Road

On The Record

Episode 19 of On The Record kicks off with one foot in the present and the other firmly planted on the long tail of rock history—touching on new Rolling Stones material before sliding into an excerpt from Brian Wise’s recent interview with Mike Mattison of Tedeschi Trucks Band.

It’s a neat juxtaposition.

The Stones are still out there, still releasing, still somehow part of the conversation.

Meanwhile, Mattison offers a more grounded perspective—talking about the realities of songwriting within a collective, and that familiar push-and-pull between keeping something for yourself or handing it over to the band.

It’s a reminder that while the legends loom large, the day-to-day craft of making music is still a collaborative, often messy business.

From there, the episode turns toward what’s ahead, with Wise preparing to head to Austin and New Orleans. What really comes through is a sense of curiosity about what the trip will feel like this time around.

Jazz Fest sits at the centre of that.

Wise recalls seeing Bonnie Raitt there during the Iraq War, when a pointed political moment didn’t land quite the way you might expect.

It’s a useful reminder that even at a festival built on shared musical values, audiences don’t always see eye to eye. With the current climate, there’s a quiet question hanging in the air: will politics find its way onto the stage again, and how will it be received?

Mackenzie chips in with memories of past trips, including a classic culture-clash moment over ribs in Memphis—friendly conversation, southern hospitality, and then a sudden detour into gun laws.

Food, naturally, gets its own run. But in a twist, Wise admits he’s gone off barbecue—hardly what you’d expect from a regular visitor to Texas and Louisiana.

Closer to home, there’s a quick mention of an upcoming documentary on Spectrum’s Mike Rudd, Someday I’ll Have Money, bringing things back to the Australian scene and its own rich roots history.

It’s a reminder that the stories don’t all point back to the US—there’s plenty happening here as well.

For now, though, this episode sits in that in-between space—bags half-packed, plans loosely in place, and the sense that anything could happen once the plane lands.
