New Release: Benjamin Tod – Vengeance & Grace

Benjamin Tod’s Vengeance & Grace is out today via Thirty Tigers, arriving as a 20-track double album built around a clear structural concept: ten songs, each presented in two distinct versions. One set features full-band arrangements rooted in traditional country; the other strips each track back to just voice and acoustic guitar.

The approach puts the focus on how arrangement shapes the material. The band versions incorporate pedal steel, fiddle, and rhythm sections, giving songs like “My Pride” and “End of My Rope” a more conventional country sound. The acoustic versions remove those elements entirely, centering on lyrics and vocal delivery.

Lyrically, the album continues Tod’s focus on addiction, personal responsibility, and faith. Tracks such as “Using Again” and “I Ain’t Bound” revisit familiar themes, but the dual-format presentation highlights differences in tone. The full-band recordings tend to feel more outward-facing, while the stripped versions come across as more direct and introspective.

The sequencing alternates between the two styles rather than separating them, reinforcing the album’s central idea of contrast. This structure encourages direct comparison between versions, making it clear the project is less about expanding stylistically and more about examining the same songs from different perspectives.

Production is deliberately restrained throughout. Even the band recordings avoid heavy layering, while the acoustic tracks are minimal to the point of feeling unvarnished.

Vengeance & Grace doesn’t mark a major shift in Tod’s sound, but it formalises a dual approach he’s used across his catalogue—presenting his songwriting in both full-band and stripped-back forms to show how it holds up in each setting.

Vengeance & Grace is available now on vinyl, CD and digital.
