Four years after Found Light, Laura Veirs returns with Temple Songs, an album that marks a significant shift in the Portland singer-songwriter’s approach to recording. Out today via Raven Marching Band, it is the first Veirs album she has written, recorded, arranged, produced and performed entirely by herself.
The album grew out of a period away from recording, during which Veirs built a backyard studio, married, blended a family with four teenagers, developed her painting practice and expanded her music teaching. “I didn’t know if I would write songs again,” she says. “Turns out that period was a gathering phase. When I made the commitment to recording the album myself, the muse caught me again and it came together very quickly.”
Recorded in just three months in late 2025 in her small “Temple of Bloom” studio, the 11-track, 30-minute album was made with two microphones and a laptop. The album continues in the indie folk/Americana vein of Veirs previous releases, but this time she opted to retain imperfections and ambient sounds from the surrounding environment rather than heavily edit the recordings.
