New Release: Stephen Cummings – Lovetown

Stephen Cummings’ Lovetown – his 1988 third solo album – gets a fresh reissue today, reaffirming its status as one of the most acclaimed Australian records of its era.

Originally recorded on an eight-track setup in Melbourne’s Hawthorn, Lovetown was built on stripped-back arrangements, acoustic guitars and minimal production. The limitations shaped its sound: intimate, understated and deliberately removed from late-’80s studio gloss. The album was co-written largely with Andrew Pendlebury and featured key contributions from musicians including Shane O’Mara and Rebecca Barnard.

At the time of release, Lovetown was widely praised by critics, topping Rolling Stone’s Australian critics’ poll and later being named among the country’s best albums of the decade. Its reputation has endured for its conversational songwriting style and restrained, atmospheric approach.

The 2026 reissue arrives via Cheersquad Records & Tapes, alongside a companion release, the Joy EP, and a rare Melbourne full-band performance marking the occasion.

For Cummings, Lovetown remains a defining work – not because it aimed to be, but because of its clarity of intent: a deliberately simple, personal record that continues to resonate.

Lovetown is available, including a limited edition purple vinyl, from Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
