DASHVILLE SKYLINE | RHYTHMS Q&A

David M. Western

How were you first introduced to your instrument/when did you first start singing?

In highschool I had a few people around me with guitars playing The Beatles and Elliott Smith and that was earth shattering for me at the time. I later came around to singing when I started writing songs around 16 years old.

Describe your music.

Indie-country songs with rock beats and modern stylings. A fresh take on classic songwriting.

What inspires you to write a song?

At the moment I’ve been writing a lot of songs based on single items that reflect bigger meanings in our lives. I’ve got this a lot from Cormac McCarthy novels and Paul Thomas Anderson films. Or the Blindboy podcast.

What has been your favourite moment of your music journey so far?

I think Dashville will be very special. Most of the time my favourite moments in music are when I’ve realised I have a new song, or when I’m hearing a new song fresh off the desk for the first time.

What’s your favourite song to play live? Own or cover.

Anything by John Prine or any kitsch old country song I’ll happily rip into. Of my own songs I like playing Run because it’s slower and I get to enjoy listening to the band properly and finding where we’re all sitting musically on that day.

Who are your most important musical influences?

Gillian Welch, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Sufjan Stevens. Story tellers with interesting voices. Randy Newman, Springsteen

What are your three favourite albums of all time? I’m really not sure, it changes every couple of years. Let’s go with:

Blood on the Tracks – Bob Dylan

Time is Golden – Big Smoke

Harrow and The Harvest – Gillian Welch

Who are you looking forward to catching live at Dashville Skyline this year?

Dear friends who I haven’t seen play in a good while… Ella Hooper, Freya Hollick, Hurray for the Riff Raff should be a knockout. I’m sure I’ll find some wonderful music that I don’t know about yet too.
