EMILY LUBITZ Q&A
Emily Lubitz recently released her latest album Two Black Horses and is on tour promoting it. Emily is also appearing at Dashville Skyline on Sunday October 5.
When did you start playing music?
When I was about 17 I started playing guitar and writing songs. I’d play with my brother and our friends around camp fires and at home with our dad too.
Describe your music.
An old Hollywood movie starring Patsy Cline, Dolly and Phoebe Bridgers who go on holidays and talk about their feelings.
What inspires you to write a song?
An overwhelming feeling that needs to be reined in and framed in a song so it’s not overwhelming anymore. A good story. An aching melody that pops into my head on my morning walk.
What has been your favourite moment of your music journey so far?
Too many to choose! Touring with my babies when they were little was always a buzz. Exhausting too. But good to get outta the house. Felt exciting and kinda defiant. Breastfeeding in the greenroom then jumping on stage. Driving through the night to the next town in Canada or Europe with the kids sleeping in the back of the bus.
What’s your favourite song to play live? Own or cover.
‘Two Black Horses Tumbling Out of the Snow’ with 4 vocal harmonies, a string section and that key change at the end. I feel dizzy by the end sometimes.
Who are your most important musical influences?
I’ve had different influences at different times in my life. For the music I’m making now, I’d say Patsy Cline, John Prine and my Husband Harry James Angus.
What are your three favourite albums of all time?
Gillian Welch – The Harrow and Harvest
Bob Dylan – The FreeWheelin’ Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash – American Recordings. IV especially.
What are what are you looking forward to at this year’s event?
I’ve been wanting to play this festival for a while now so just very excited to be amongst it.
You’re performing on Sunday October 5, who are you excited to catch? (Full line up and tickets at: Dashville Skyline).
Vincent Neil Emerson, Mama Kin Spender, Magpie Diaries and Fanny! But also, everyone! So many great acts!
