On the back of winning Ensemble of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in December, Prince Edward Island’s The East Pointers announced they were touring Australia in 2017. Having already played Tasmania, WOMADelaide (and WOMAD NZ), and Victoria earlier this month, the band will travel up and down the East Coast, playing rural and metropolitan shows throughout NSW and QLD.
Simultaneously, the upcoming Juno Awards sees the trio nominated in the category of Traditional Roots Album of the Year for their beautifully immersive debut album Secret Victory. The album features 10 brand new original tracks written by guitarist Jake Charron, fiddler Tim Chaisson and his cousin, banjoist Koady Chaisson.
With Secret Victory, The East Pointers unwrap new possibilities in a musical style that dates back centuries, yet is still relevant on multiple, divergent continents. “That’s something The East Pointers are trying to accomplish – breathe some new, original life into traditional music,” confirms Tim Chaisson, whose solo career as a singer, songwriter (see 2015’s acclaimed Lost in Light) is thoroughly established.“A lot of times, people think of it as music for an older generation but we’re hoping to introduce a whole new generation of listeners.”
With their adrenalized and ridiculously hip performance, beautiful songs, free-wheeling, feisty instrumental jigs, stomps and reels and heart-breaking harmonies, The East Pointers are torchbearers for a new wave in traditional Celtic music. They brought the house down on their 2016 tour of Australia, gracing the stages of more than 25 festivals and venues across the country. The rest of their Australian tour is sure to raise the roof yet again! AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES:
