Katie Brianna’s second album ‘Victim or the Heroine’ is a songbook of light and shade, woven with fatalism and introspection. From the dreamy ebb of ‘Thorn In Your Side’, to the sublime pop of the new single ‘King’, the distance Katie has travelled, personally and creatively, is evident in the nuanced adult tension of the lyrics and is a step towards a bright new creative direction. The first single from the album ‘Birmingham’, saw Katie nominated for New Talent of the year at this year’s Golden Guitars, 10 years after her first nomination.
King is a song that takes a more positive direction and is one of the more upbeat on the album. Admiration, love, loyalty and desperation are the the themes of the track. Katie says, “I guess the desperation part is giving yourself over to someone completely, telling them that they become your world and maybe that they are that one person who gives you a reason to be”.
“Katie Brianna has a lovely knack of writing songs where verses slide ever so elegantly into choruses that demand your full attention”. Polly Coufos – The Australian – 20 August 2016. 4 stars.
