‘Shadowman in the Light’ is the new single from Blue Mountains musician Jimmi Carr’s forthcoming Flight Cycle, which is out on February 21. It’s an uplifting pop song about love and redemption. The song, and the new album, were produced as part of Jimmi’s recently submitted PhD on cross-cultural influence in music, which had a particular focus on fusions of Anglo/American pop music with Southern and Western African music.
The song is also influenced by electro-pop and hip-hop. The product of the cross-genre and cross-cultural blend has similarities with the music of Vampire Weekend and Paul Simon’s Graceland album. It follows from the first single released from the album ‘Come On Over’, which dropped a month ago and has had very positive response from radio across the country. The new album is set to be a breakthrough release in Jimmi’s ever evolving career.
Michael Smith recently wrote in his review of Jimmi’s previous album – “Clever songs, quirky arrangements, Carr’s genius is to is to meld diverse elements into something quite unique.” – Rhythms Magazine (2020)
The video for the new single was produced by Blue Mountains animator and hiphop artist Tenth Dan. It features an animated Jimmi in contrasting settings of ‘light’ and ‘dark’, and the ‘shadowman’ looking for love on a television show. It’s a fun video that reflects the song’s themes of romance and love.
