Port Fairy Folk Festival announce festival has now SOLD OUT
With 9 days before Port Fairy Folk Festival kicks off its 41st event on Labour Day weekend 10-13 March, the festival announce that tickets sold out just before midnight on Tuesday 28 February. The sell out tracks in advance of previous years’ sell outs which have generally hit a week or less out from the festival dates. From Thursday 2 March a ticket exchange program will be available via www.portfairyfolkfestival.com for those wishing to buy or sell.
A beloved event on the Australian music festival calendar, Port Fairy Folk Festival will this year play host to more international acts than ever before. International performers include Aoife Scott (Ireland), Bazzookas (Netherlands), Boo Hewerdine (UK), Buckman Coe (Canada), Dori Freeman (USA), Eddi Reader (Scotland), Folk Uke (USA), Graeme James (NZ), Hollie Smith (NZ), Les Poules a Colin (Canada), Manu Delago (Austria), Marlon Williams (NZ) Martha Tilston (UK), Mel Parson (NZ), Mercan Dede (Canada/Turkey), Mexrrissey (Mexico), Mundy (Ireland), Phil Wiggins (USA) & Dom Turner (AUST), Roo Panes (UK), Seamus Begley Trio (Ireland), The Chipolatas (UK), The Jerry Cans (CAN), The Young Folk (Ireland), Warsaw Village Band (Poland) and Willie Watson (USA).
The 2017 festival will also play host to a not to be repeated line up performing ‘The Last Waltz Revisited’, presented by Brian Nankervis. With so many star studded performers intersecting at this year’s event, Nankervis has the unique opportunity to bring together a cast including Eddi Reader, Tim Rogers, Tex Perkins, Marlon Williams, Vika & Linda and Vince Jones amongst others, in this re-imagining of one of the greatest concerts of all time – the 1976 farewell concert for super group The Band, held at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.
Local acts on this year’s lineup include Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, Dog Trumpet, Don Walker, Lior, Mick Thomas & The Roving, Commission, Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen, The Waifs, Cookin’ on 3 Burners featuring Tex Perkins, Van Morrison’s ‘Masterpieces’ (presented by Vince Jones & The Astral Orchestra), Vika & Linda and rising stars Tash Sultana and Greta Ray among many others.
With a jam packed schedule of collaborative sessions and forums, another highlight of the 2017 program is ‘For What It’s Worth – The Power of the Political Song’. The festival has just announced that Cathy Guthrie, grand daughter of Woody and daughter of Arlo will join this session, alongside her Folk Uke bandmate Amy Nelson, daughter of Willy Nelson, plus Eddi Reader, Mundy, Brett Clarke, John Douglas and Rob Hirst, in a session of songs and discussion around whether songs can affect change and if we can keep politics and humans rights to the fore through arts and music.
But wait…. are you sitting down? In breaking news, the festival has also announced that there will be a chair-free area in main stage two, with audiences invited to dance away the hours in non-seated bliss! Note to chair lovers: there will still be plenty of seated options across the festival arena so fear not, there are still plenty of provisions for bums on seats!
Other new developments for the 2017 program include the introduction of a busker’s competition with the winner to receive a $1000 cash prize and a gig at the 2018 festival, sponsored by The Port Fairy Chamber of Commerce. Interested buskers can register at https://www.portfairyfolkfestival.com/buskers/
